Vehicle Description The AC car company was formed in 1903.
Though it had already been transferred through a few owners, by 1933 AC had built a reputation for delivering exhilarating performance.
An AC had become the first British car to win the Monte-Carlo rally, and set continuous speed records throughout 1920's.
AC was bought in 1930 by a duo of brothers named Hurlock.
The Hurlocks decided to commence building cars, but with an emphasis on sporting models.
These models included two distinct chassis, a long and short wheelbase.
Continual upgrades to the product meant that the Weller designed 6 cylinder engine produced 70 hp, and could be ordered in 80 hp tune.
(60, and 90 hp supercharged variants were also offered) Also gone was the 3 speed gearbox in favor of a new, synchronized 4 speed unit.
These specifications, along with the AC car company's reputation for building high quality, well appointed autos meant that prices would reflect the premium characteristics of the cars.
Jump to the time period 1935-1937, and AC cars was producing the Sports Tourer model.
This was a four-seat, two door sporting car built on the long wheelbase chassis.
Offered with the 70 hp or 80 hp Weller engine, and a short list of additional features.
Each car was fitted with central chassis lubrication, built-in central jacking system, and Telecontrol shock absorbers.
38 units would be produced.
In 1937 3 cars would be built specifically for offer in the U.
S.
market.
They would feature a widened body, thought to entice the American consumer.
All 3 cars were sold, but due to a lack of parts availability, and no dealer support network that would be all until after WWII.
This car, chassis L550 was sold new in April 1937 by English Motorcars USA to a Mrs.
George Amory.
The car was used throughout the time spanning then and the 1950's when it was registered with the Long Island Sports Car Club.
It is thought to have even raced at Bridgehampton! The second owner used the car and eventually brought it in for service, never to return.
In 1967 the car was purchased for $499.
80 to clear a mechanic's lien.
This next steward of L550 would own the car for close to 40 years.
In 2004 the current owner, and well-known AC collector would purchase the car and send it to be restored by Waitsfield Motorcar Co.
Emerging from restoration the car would be invited to grace the show field at Pebble Beach in 2007.
After showing very well at Pebble, L550 would go on to collect awards at the Amelia Island Concours, Hershey, and eventually win first prizes with both the Classic Car Club of America, and the Antique Automobile Club of America.
