6L air-cooled flat 6 engine 6-speed manual transmission Limited slip differential In 1994 the Porsche 911 received a second major redesign in a nearly 30 year history.
It happened to be that both occurrences came only 5 years apart.
With the previous, 964 generation carrying over about 15% of parts from the 911 generation, the 993 would claim to carry about 20% from there.
This meant that the new-for-1995 911 would share almost nothing in common with the 911s of the pastexcept for one feature.
The heart and soul of every Porsche has always been the powerplant.
The 993 engine was the same M64 carried over from the previous generation 964, but with improvements leading to a base horsepower output of 270.
Although not an earth-shattering figure, the 993 was blessed as the first Porsche to receive a 6 speed transmission.
The extra ratio allowed the driver to keep the willing engine in it's power band more effectively.
In designing the 993, engineers gave the car an aluminum multi-link rear suspension and attached it to an aluminum subframe with revised geometry.
These changes caused the rear width of the car to grow, and reduced the dreaded off-throttle oversteer that was so prone to the outgoing car.
The exterior design was deemed by some to be the most sweeping change.
The English design was that of Tony Hatter, and saw the 911 evolve into something a bit more modern.
Although it seemed a revolutionary change from the 964, the 993 styling was certainly an evolution of the 911 shape.
The last of the true Porsches, the 993 marked the end of the air-cooled era.
The time is now to own a piece of history before prices really hit the stratosphere!.
